Zainul Abedin established this art gallery in his native town Mymensingh in collaboration with local elites and district administration, to encourage and decentralization of art movement from Dhaka to outside.This art gallery was inaugurated 01 Baishakh 1382 (15 April 1975) by the than honorable vice-president Mr.Nazrul Islam, the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.
Latter it was upgraded and transformed into a museum through a development project executed by the Bangladesh National Museum, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Now, it is directed as a branch office of Bangladesh National Museum under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs since 31-08-1999.
